Medicare and AASW Accredited Social Workers Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) for Mental Health Workers GPs can refer patients to social workers eligible to practice as mental health workers. A Medicare rebate is available under the MBS mental health worker Scheme. To be eligible social workers must first be assessed by the AASW. Eligibility will be determined by: 1) Membership of the AASW 2) Evidence that you have met the 1999, 2004 Competency standards for Mental Health Social Workers Better Access to Mental Health Care Medicare items can only be provided to people with 'an assessed mental disorder' that is being managed by a GP under a GP Mental Health Care Plan or a psychiatrist assessment and management plan, or on direct referral from a psychiatrist or a paediatrician (for treatment of a child). A Medicare rebate is available under the MBS items 80150, 80155, 80160 and 80165 for Individual Focussed Psychological Strategies services and Item 80170 for Group Focussed Psychological Strategies services provided by an AASW Accredited Social Worker.
